Detroit
At the Detroit Institute of Art, with the advent of video as an art form, artists began to capture the fleeting interval between an action and its effect. Five videos examine this causal relationship and document the evolution of video over four decades. As time-based work evolved, art was no longer confined to the tradition of stop-action records used by painting and sculpture.

Photography – The First 100 Years: A Survey from the DIA's Collection
At the Detroit Institute of Art, photographs from the early 1840s to 1940 collection. The exhibition includes many well-known works from the medium's history by both European and American photographers, including iconic images by Julia Margaret Cameron, Hill and Adamson, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston.

Avedon Fashion Photographs 1944-2000
At the Detroit Institute of Art, a comprehensive study exhibit of Richard Avedon's (1923-2004) fashion photographs that includes a selection of over 200 images representing his stylistic evolution over a period of 50 years.

Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500 to Present

This exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Art explores the artistic consequences of the variations and dynamics of cultural exchanges between Africans and Europeans over 500 years, making it the broadest analytical overview on the subject to date. Features 100 of Africa's finest three-dimensional artworks and utilitarian objects executed in wood, ivory, metals, and textiles in diverse materials from the holdings of the Detroit Institute of Arts and other leading American and international museums and private collections. The Detroit Institute of Art is the opening.

Art in Performance

The Dayton Philharmonic Junior String Orchestra will present a free and the first concert in the 2009-2010 season at the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church, featuring three major works: Corelli’s Concerto Grosso, Op.6, #8, “Christmas Concerto”; Mozart’s Divertimento in F Major, K. 138; and the Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock. The dramatic Corelli Concerto features a small solo group of violins and cellos. The Divertimento, composed by Mozart when he was only 16 years old, displays the musical genius that would be fully developed later. The Capriol Suite incorporates dances from the Elizabethan period which Warlock peppered with 20th century harmonies. The JSO will end the concert with a selection of Christmas and Hanukkah music. Dali and Disney: The Art and Animation of Destino

Award Winners from the 7th Regional Exhibition

Andrew Lemmon, Wendi Norton and Joshua Witten, award winners from last year exhibition, fills the gallery with their work. Art to see are Lemmon’s conceptual sculptural works, Norton's watercolor paintings which demonstrate her ability to create distinct moods through color and environment, and Witten's draftsmanship and use of line add to the underlying message of his work. At the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft , this exhibition seeks to present some of the ways that popular culture has influenced contemporary African American Artists. An Exhibition of Works by Robert Motherwell (1915-1991)
Charleston
At the Clay Center, this exhibition explores Motherwell’s working process with forty lithographs, screenprints and etchings; three monoprints; and seven drawings, collages and paintings dating from 1966 to 1990. As the youngest member of the heroic generation of post-war Abstract Expressionists who revolutionized painting and shifted the art world's attention from Paris to New York, h is also the only one of the group (which included Jackson Pollock, Hans Hoffman and Willem De Kooning) for whom printmaking became a major preoccupation. Motherwell's work as a printmaker as well as a painter distinguished him, both for his innovations in graphic media and for his stunning images. For more information, www.theclaycenter.org.
